The recent attack on three Indian Catholic priests in Nkwanta, Oti Region, Ghana, is a deeply troubling incident that has sparked outrage and calls for justice. The priests—Father Robinson Melkis, Father Frank Henry Jacob, and Father Martin George—are Capuchin Friars who have been dedicated to missionary work in Ghana since 2005. Alongside them, two municipal officials, Samuel Worlanyo Asugbey and another from the Nkwanta-South Municipal Assembly, also endured the mob’s aggression.

Details of the Incident

The priests were brutally attacked at a fuel station while accompanying a bulldozer hired for a seminary project in Chaiso. Misunderstanding turned dangerous when a mob falsely accused them of stealing the bulldozer. What ensued was a horrific 30-minute ordeal during which they were beaten until Ghana Immigration Service officers intervened.

Father Frank Henry Jacob sustained significant injuries, including the loss of hearing in one ear, and has been referred to Yendi Hospital for treatment. The assault was partially captured on video, which has circulated widely on social media, highlighting the brutality of the incident.

Response and Repercussions

Adding insult to injury, the mob lodged a theft complaint with the police, leading to the priests’ detention and the bulldozer’s impoundment. After Monsignor Joseph Kofi Nsiah, Vicar-General of the Catholic Diocese of Jasikan, intervened, the priests were released on bail pending further investigations.

The leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Nkwanta-South has publicly condemned the attack, issuing a formal apology. In a statement signed by Constituency Secretary Prince Succeed Fiagadzi, the NDC expressed deep regret, describing the act as unacceptable and extending heartfelt apologies to the priests and the Catholic Church.

Call for Justice

The Catholic Church, alongside other organisations, has demanded swift justice and stronger measures to prevent such incidents in the future. This plea underscores the broader issue of mob violence in Ghana, which often stems from misinformation and lack of due process.

Next Steps

Police investigations are underway, and many are watching to ensure the perpetrators are held accountable. Beyond the immediate legal repercussions, this case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of mob justice and the urgent need for community education on resolving disputes lawfully.

This incident is not just a local tragedy but a moment for reflection on societal issues, including respect for human rights, tolerance, and the rule of law.
